Which one of the following types of blood cells is responsible for the clotting of blood?

A

Erythrocytes

B

Lymphocytes

C

Monocytes

D

Thrombocytes

Correct Answer: D

Thrombocytes

Thrombocytes, commonly known as platelets, are tiny disc-shaped cell fragments produced in the bone marrow by giant cells called megakaryocytes. Among all blood cells, thrombocytes are solely and directly responsible for the clotting of blood in the human body. The normal platelet count in a healthy adult ranges between 1.5 to 4 lakh per cubic millimetre of blood.

  • Thrombocytes: Immediately rush to any injured blood vessel, form a platelet plug, and trigger the coagulation cascade to produce a firm, stable blood clot
  • Erythrocytes (RBCs): Contain haemoglobin and carry oxygen to body tissues, completely uninvolved in clotting mechanism
  • Lymphocytes: Specialised white blood cells that manage immune responses and produce protective antibodies against infections
  • Monocytes: Largest white blood cells that engulf harmful pathogens and regulate inflammation, having no connection to blood clotting
