Chandragupta Maurya is believed to have passed away at Shravanabelagola in present-day Karnataka. After ruling a vast empire across northern and central India, he abdicated the throne around 298 BCE in favor of his son Bindusara. According to Jain traditions, he became a disciple of the Jain monk Bhadrabahu and traveled south during a severe famine.
Historical accounts also associate Shravanabelagola with the final phase of Chandragupta Maurya’s life as an ascetic.
At Shravanabelagola, he spent his final years in religious devotion and meditation. He is said to have undertaken Sallekhana, a Jain ritual of voluntary fasting unto death for spiritual purification. This sacred site later became an important center of Jain pilgrimage and continues to hold historical and religious significance today.
