Chanakya
Chanakya played an important role in helping Chandragupta Maurya establish his empire in the late 4th century BCE. After the decline and overthrow of the Nanda dynasty in Magadha, the region of northern India was politically unstable, especially after the invasion by Alexander the Great. Chanakya, a scholar from Taxila, identified the potential of Chandragupta and taught him the art of politics, warfare, espionage, and administration. Chanakya’s approach to politics was to forge alliances and create a bureaucratic administration. He created a revenue system and an intelligence network that made the region internally stable. His political ideology was later embodied in the Arthashastra, which helped Chandragupta expand a small kingdom into a large empire.
