The Topography of inversion of relief is a landform feature seen in folded mountain regions. In general, anticlines form ridges and synclines form valleys. But over a long period of time, erosion changes this pattern. Different rocks do not erode at the same speed. If the rocks in an anticline are soft, they get worn away faster, and the ridge slowly lowers to form a valley. On the other hand, if the syncline contains harder rocks, it resists erosion and may remain as a ridge. Because of this process, the original relief pattern becomes reversed. This change is called inversion of relief. It is important in geomorphology because it shows that present landforms may not always represent the original geological structure of an area.
