Which place marks the southernmost point of India?
A
Cape Comorin
B
Point Calimere
C
Indira Point
D
Kovalam
Correct Answer:
C
Indira Point
Indira Point marks the southernmost point of India and is located on Great Nicobar Island in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It lies south of the Indian mainland and extends further than Cape Comorin (Kanyakumari), which is only the southernmost point of mainland India. Indira Point was earlier known as Pygmalion Point and was renamed in honor of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Although it was affected by the 2004 tsunami and partially submerged, it still remains the southernmost tip of Indian territory.
